Ia Erlandsson is a composer with a background in classical piano, progressing into playing keyboard in metal bands both for recordings and live performances. She has several years of musical studies in composition and piano, these studies include composition for two years at Sundsgårdens folkhögskola and one year at St Sigfrids folkhögskola. In 2018 she was part of the first class to graduate with a bachelor’s degree in musical composition from Örebro University, after which she moved on to studying for a master’s degree in musical composition at Malmö Academy of Music. In 2017 she was awarded “Composer of the Year 2017” by Bergslagens Kammarsymfoniker, hence they also commissioned the piece “Ianuae” to be performed in concert by the orchestra.
Her music strives to invite the listener to discover and appreciate contemporary realms within music that might often be considered more difficult to appreciate by the general audience. This is done by experimenting with the combination of familiar and easy-to-listen-to elements from popular music and elements from contemporary art music. The music ranges from works for symphony orchestra to solo pieces, and the influence from her background in the metal genres can often be heard. She has participated in creating music for film and theatre, along with composing music for ensembles such as Wirénkvartetten, Norrbotten Big Band and The Swedish Chamber Orchestra.
